Around Breestraat and in the student housing on Nieuwe Rijn, many Leiden young professionals wonder what happens when their temporary contract ends. As of 1 July 2026, the Unemployment Insurance Act (Werkloosheidswet) changes significantly: less paperwork, faster payments and clear room to earn additional income. The key points at a glance.
Faster Payment of the First WW Benefit
Through direct connection to payroll reporting systems, the UWV will pay out the first benefit within two weeks from 2026. This is a significant improvement compared to the current four to eight weeks and prevents people in the historic city centre from immediately facing financial problems after dismissal.
Simplified Daily Wage Calculation
The daily wage will henceforth be based on the average of the last twelve months. Holiday allowance is included as standard, one-off bonuses are spread out and the maximum daily wage rises to € 287.50. Seasonal workers no longer need to undergo a separate calculation.
Relaxed Additional Earnings Rules
The strict deduction for every hour worked disappears. Up to forty per cent of the previous wage may be earned additionally without the entire benefit being lost. Only the amount above that is offset. This makes it easier to take up part-time work in the narrow Leiden city centre.
Adjusted Job Application Obligation
For those over sixty with at least thirty years of employment history, lighter requirements apply. Fewer job applications per month, more room for coaching and retraining. The UWV draws up a personal plan together with the person concerned.
Unchanged Aspects of the WW
The duration remains linked to the employment history: minimum three, maximum twenty-four months. In the event of summary dismissal, the culpability test (verwijtbaarheidstoets) remains in place. Anyone who is culpably unemployed receives no benefit.
Obligations for Employers
- Check HR systems for connection to the new UWV link
- Have settlement agreements (vaststellingsovereenkomsten) reviewed by an employment lawyer
- Inform employees about the new additional earnings room
