Leiden residents with a Dutch pension who are considering emigrating to treaty countries, such as the US, Australia or Israel, benefit from social security treaties with over 45 countries. In these treaty countries, you receive your AOW pension without the need for voluntary insurance, as long as you meet the residence or work criteria. The SVB pays it out monthly to a Dutch bank account or a local bank account in your new place of residence. For Leiden residents with a low income, a supplement is available. Not a treaty country? After 15 years of emigration, your AOW benefit is halved. In the case of double pensions, set-off applies. You apply via the SVB form 'Apply for pension', with annual proof of life. Tax: often 2% in the Netherlands, plus local levy. Upon death, it passes to survivors via the Anw. Local tip for Leiden: consult the elderly desk in the Sleutelstad or the SVB helpdesk for expats from Leiden. Check the treaty status on government.nl. Disputes are resolved via the SGB procedure. These arrangements simplify life for Leiden pensioners abroad and prevent double contributions.
