Have you received too much benefit from the Tax Authorities? Then you must repay it. This can happen due to a higher income or changed circumstances. Discover your options and rights in Leiden here.

Why do I have to repay?

Benefits are paid out as advances based on an estimate of your income. If it later turns out that you earned more or your situation has changed, you must return the surplus. This is called a recovery.

Common reasons for recovery

  • Your income turned out to be higher than expected
  • You started living together with a benefit partner
  • Your rent has changed
  • You used fewer childcare hours
  • Your child turned 18 or moved out
  • You did not report changes on time

Option for payment arrangement

Can't you repay the amount all at once? You can apply for a payment arrangement:

AmountArrangement
Up to € 50Offset against future benefits
€ 50 to € 1,000Repayment in 24 months
More than € 1,000Standard 24 months, extension possible

Customised payment arrangement

If the standard arrangement is not feasible, you can apply for a personal arrangement. The Tax Authorities will then assess your situation based on:

  • Your monthly income
  • Your fixed expenses
  • Your savings or assets
  • Any other debts

Applying for remission

In rare cases, you can apply for remission if repayment is impossible, both now and in the future, due to exceptional circumstances.

Extra questions about benefits

How do I find out if I have to repay?
You will receive a decision from the Tax Authorities with details about the amount and reason. You will receive this by post or via MijnOverheid. Also check your benefit details online via Mijn toeslagen or contact them for clarification.

What if I do not respond to a recovery?
If you do nothing, the Tax Authorities may proceed to enforced collection. This may mean that they offset the amount against benefits, levy on your income or charge additional costs. Contact them quickly for an arrangement or objection.

How do I lodge an objection against an incorrect calculation?
You have 6 weeks after the decision to object via a form on the Tax Authorities' website or via Mijn toeslagen. Continue paying during the objection, unless you apply for a deferral, and gather evidence.
