Frequently Asked Questions about Holiday Pay

How do I determine my holiday pay?

Your holiday allowance is at least 8% of your gross annual income, including salary, bonuses and allowances. Multiply your gross annual salary by 0.08 for the base amount. Check your CAO or contract for any higher percentages. Your payslip often shows the accrued amount.

When will I receive my holiday pay?

The payment usually takes place in May or June, for the period from June of the previous year to May of the current year. This may vary per employer. Consult your contract or CAO for specific dates. Upon dismissal, it is paid out in the final settlement.

Can my employer pay less than 8%?

No, 8% is the statutory minimum. Employers may not pay less, unless the law permits an exception. Check your payslip and contract if in doubt. In case of an underpayment, you can contact the Netherlands Labour Authority (Inspectie SZW).

Is holiday pay based on gross or net salary?

The calculation is based on your gross annual salary, including allowances and overtime. Net salary plays no role. The amount paid out is gross and is taxable, resulting in a lower net amount.

What about holiday pay during illness or unemployment benefits (WW)?

During illness, you accrue holiday pay on your received salary. While on unemployment benefits (WW), you do not receive holiday allowance, as this is not salary. For part-time work during WW, you do accrue allowance on the earned salary.
