Asset Depletion Period for Social Assistance in Leiden: how long must you wait?
Does your assets exceed the social assistance limit in Leiden? Then the Municipality of Leiden activates a depletion period. This article explains how long you will not receive social assistance, how the period is calculated, and which local exceptions apply.
What does the depletion period in Leiden entail?
In Leiden, just like elsewhere in the Netherlands, if your assets exceed the social assistance limit, you must first 'deplete' them before you are entitled to social assistance. The maximum period is two years (24 months), depending on the degree of excess. During this period, the Municipality of Leiden does not pay full social assistance, to promote self-reliance and prevent abuse.
Calculation of the period according to Leiden practice
- Small excess: A shorter period, minimum 1 month, such as for an excess up to €1,000.
- Larger excesses: Up to a maximum of 24 months, calculated using the formula: (excess - exemption) / monthly social assistance norm for your household in Leiden.
- Local exception for illness or participation: The period may be suspended if you participate in Leiden reintegration programs or demonstrate medical impediments via the general practitioner.
At the end of the period, you can reapply for social assistance at the Leiden Service Centre (LSC). Proof of expenditure is not mandatory, but the municipality strictly checks the sale of non-exempt assets, such as second cars or superfluous household goods. In Leiden, this policy encourages personal responsibility, in line with the Participation Act and the local Social Support Ordinance 2023.
